878 mothers and babies remain missing at Bessborough. We must force the Government to step in before developers build over this land.

Despite the Commission of Investigation confirming it is ‘highly likely’ burials took place in the grounds of the former Mother and Baby Institution at Bessborough, An Coimisiún Pleanála has granted planning permission for a private development on the site.

We are calling on the Irish state to intervene and use a Compulsory Purchase Order to take control of the site and preserve it as a public memorial. We are also calling on the Government to:

• Release the unpublished technical archaeological reports concerning burials at Bessborough
• Unseal all burial records held within the Commission of Investigation archive
• Direct the Attorney General to open an inquest

The Government might be fatigued by the legacy of forced adoption, child trafficking and mass unmarked graves. The Irish people are not.
